5 easy ways to stay in shape while travelling

When you travel, it’s easy to slip off your eating habits and fall for the delicious foods a new destination is offering. There will always be the perfect excuse: “I’m not going to be here tomorrow, so I might as well make the most of it!”. However, it is essential to take care of your body by choosing nourishing food and being physically active. Staying in shape is just the result of healthy and sustainable choices.

1. Bring Snacks

Carry healthy snacks in your backpack to avoid buying calorie-loaded street food. Some healthy snacks include fresh seasonal fruit, raw nuts, granola bars.

My favourite fruits to carry with me are bananas, apples, pears, plums, grapes, and clementines. They are easy to eat without making a mess.

Nuts, such as almonds, pistachios, and hazelnuts, are pleasantly crunchy and full of healthy fats.

2. Walk Everywhere

If you’re staying in the central part of a city, it is best to stroll around so you can explore different streets. I have done this even when I have stayed outside of the city center because I enjoy walking and observing how people live.

Think about it, if you take the underground, you will miss all the fun. If you walk, you don’t need to worry about how much time it takes to get from one point to another. The journey becomes the experience.

Having over 10K steps is just a bonus!

3. Do quick exercise

As soon as you wake up, you can do a quick 10-minute workout.

If you don’t know many exercises, you can follow a YouTube video. Even the toughest high-intensity workout seems bearable when you know it will last for only 10 minutes.

This is a great way to stay in shape and build muscle while enjoying your trip.

4. Eat wholesome food

You can savor local cuisine and still stay in shape. Choose to have up to one indulgent meal per day or decide to never have two unhealthy dishes in a row.

The best way to eat well is to go to restaurants with a variety of salads and baked dishes. Street food, which is often fried, is not your best bet.

If you are staying in an apartment, rather than a room, you might also have access to a kitchen. I know many people prefer to get away from cooking their meals while traveling. Yet, you don’t need to make anything fancy. Preparing one salad to eat along with another dish will bring some healthy fiber, vitamins, and minerals into your day.

5. Carry a reusable water bottle

It is incredibly important to stay hydrated, especially when travelling in hot climates.

People often mistake feeling thirsty with feeling hungry. Always take a few sips of water 30-15 minutes before having a meal or a snack. This will ensure you are giving your body what it needs.

If you carry a reusable water bottle, it will serve you as a reminder to have a few sips. What is more, it helps you take care of the environment!

Staying in shape while travelling

As you can see, staying in shape while traveling does not need to be challenging and unpleasant. Make these small changes that will benefit your body. Plus, wholesome food and physical activity also boost your mood and energy. So you can feel your best while exploring the world!
